What a real security door is, and what it is not.
The word “security” gets stuck on a lot of doors that would not stop a determined person with a screwdriver. A genuine security screen door is a tested product. To carry the rating it must pass the full AS 5039 suite, knife shear, jemmy (lever), pull, probe and dynamic impact, and it has to be installed to AS 5040 with a one-way screw pattern into a sound frame and a three-point or deadlock locking system. If any one of those is missing, what you have is a heavy flyscreen.
Every door we fit across Wollongong meets AS 5039 / AS 5040. We do not sell decorative grille doors dressed up as security barriers, and we install so the certification actually holds in your opening, not just on the test rig.
Mesh and frame options.
- 316 marine-grade stainless steel mesh: the coastal standard. Woven 0.8mm stainless wire in a marine-grade powder-coated frame. Best corrosion resistance for homes near the water. ~$900-$1,400 installed.
- 304 stainless steel mesh: a step down in salt resistance, suited to homes a few kilometres inland. ~$750-$1,100.
- Structural perforated aluminium: a solid aluminium sheet with punched holes, strong and lower cost, best for inland Figtree, Unanderra and up the valley where salt air is mild. ~$450-$750.
- Diamond-grille aluminium: the traditional grille door. Lower security rating, lowest price, fine for a back laundry door. ~$350-$550.
Locking and fire egress.
We fit three-point locking on hinged doors as standard, top, centre and bottom bolts driven by a single key. On any bedroom or main exit door we use a key-free internal release (snib or internal handle), so the door is locked against the street but opens instantly from inside in a fire. This matters under NSW building rules and it matters for any family with kids or older residents. Sliding security doors get a hook-bolt or triple-lock to suit the track.
A worked example.
A weatherboard home in Figtree wants the front door and the rear sliding door done. We measure both, spec 316 stainless for the front (it faces the prevailing salt-bearing breeze) and a 316 stainless sliding screen for the rear. Front hinged door with triple-lock and internal release $1,180, rear sliding security door $1,250, total $2,430 supplied and installed in a single day. A perforated-aluminium version of the same job would land around $1,500.
Where we install security doors.
Pairs well with window security screens for ground-floor openings, and a pet door can be built into the screen without voiding its rating. Weighing it up? Read stainless vs aluminium screens and our security door cost guide.
