When a retractable screen is the right call.
A fixed flyscreen on a big rear opening does its job but spoils the view and clutters the doorway. In Wollongong, where so many homes are designed around the outlook to the escarpment or the sea, that is a real cost. A retractable flyscreen solves it: the mesh pulls across when you want it and rolls back into a slim cassette down the side of the frame when you don’t, so the opening and the view stay clear.
Where they suit.
- Bi-fold doors: a double (centre-meeting) retractable closes across the full span and disappears to both sides.
- French and hinged doors: a single retractable on each leaf, or a centre-meeting pair.
- Stacker and slider doors: a wide single retractable runs the length of the opening.
- Large view windows: a vertical or horizontal retractable keeps the glass and the outlook uninterrupted.

A double centre-meeting retractable flyscreen across the 2.7m opening, with marine-grade housing, comes to $660 supplied and installed. When the screen is rolled away the bi-fold and the outlook are completely unobstructed.

A retractable screen handles insects but not security, so pair it with a security screen door on entry doors, or fit window security screens on the adjacent openings. For fixed openings a standard flyscreen costs less.
