Which security screen mesh actually lasts on a Wollongong street.

Short answer. Within roughly 1 km of breaking surf, specify 316 marine-grade woven stainless: about $900 to $1,400 installed on a hinged door, and it will still be sound in 20 years. Between about 1 km and 5 km back, 304 stainless at $750 to $1,100 is the sensible grade. West of the highway around Figtree, Unanderra, Kembla Grange and West Dapto, perforated aluminium at $450 to $750 is genuinely enough, and paying for 316 there is money better spent screening two more windows.

Mesh grade is the single decision that decides whether your screens are still presentable in 2040 or embarrassing by 2032. It is also the decision most quotes leave vague. Below is the whole specification laid out: what the numbers on the product mean, what Wollongong’s coastal plain does to each option, and the cheap specification that fails here faster than almost anywhere else in New South Wales.

What the grade number on the mesh actually means

Grade 304 and grade 316 are both austenitic stainless steels and they look identical in a showroom. The difference is roughly two per cent molybdenum in the 316 alloy, and molybdenum is what resists chloride pitting. Chloride is exactly what sea spray is made of. That single alloying change is the whole argument for marine grade in a coastal suburb, and it is also why anyone who tells you “stainless is stainless” either does not know or is hoping you will not ask.

Wire diameter matters as much as alloy. Security-grade woven mesh runs about 0.8 mm wire with an aperture around 1.5 mm to 2 mm, which is what lets it pass the knife-shear and probe tests in AS 5039. Insect mesh is roughly 0.25 mm fibreglass. Between those two sits a lot of mid-weight mesh sold with security-sounding names and no test report. The AS 5039 regime covers knife shear, a jemmy or lever attack, a pull test on both mesh and frame, a probe test and a dynamic impact test. AS 5040 covers installation, including one-way screw fixing so the screen cannot simply be unscrewed from outside, and AS 5041 sets out the test methods themselves.

On perforated aluminium the number to ask for is sheet thickness. A genuine security sheet is around 1.5 mm with small punched holes. Thinner decorative sheet looks similar from three metres away and will not survive a jemmy test. For frames, the meaningful reference is architectural powder coating to AS 3715, which is the standard separating a coating rated for exterior architectural use from a general-purpose one.

The local conditions that decide the grade

Australia’s atmospheric corrosivity zone mapping, the framework behind AS 4312, puts breaking-surf frontage in the most severe categories, and Wollongong has an unusual amount of it. The city sits on a narrow coastal plain squeezed between the escarpment and the sea, so almost the entire built-up area is within a few kilometres of salt water. The summer north-easter is the dominant sea breeze and it carries salt aerosol inland every afternoon. The escarpment then traps humidity against the slope, which keeps surfaces damp for longer after the salt lands. Around 1,200 mm of rain a year falls on the coastal strip, and that rain is your friend, not your enemy.

That last point catches people out. Salt only corrodes while it sits on the metal. An exposed north-east elevation in Fairy Meadow gets rinsed by most of that 1,200 mm. A screen tucked into a deep porch, under a wide verandah or behind a carport collects the same airborne salt and never gets washed, so chloride concentrates on the surface. In practice the sheltered openings on a coastal house corrode faster than the openings that cop the weather. When we walk a job at Towradgi or Corrimal Beach we spec by elevation and shelter, not just by the street address.

Two more local factors. Homes around Port Kembla and Warrawong pick up industrial atmosphere on top of the salt, which pushes the effective corrosivity up a category and makes 316 the sensible default even a couple of kilometres from the water. And on the escarpment side, around Figtree, Mount Keira and Mount Kembla, bushfire-prone land brings AS 3959 into the decision: screens in those areas need a mesh aperture no greater than 2 mm in corrosion-resistant steel, bronze or aluminium, with aluminium excluded at the highest attack levels. Woven stainless clears that requirement comfortably, so plenty of escarpment homes end up with stainless for fire reasons rather than salt reasons.

The cheap specification that fails early here

There is one combination we are called back to more than any other, and it is almost always a beachside address that took the lowest quote:

  • Perforated aluminium mesh within sight of the water. White oxidation bloom shows up in 2 to 4 years and the sheet goes chalky and pitted well before it is 10.
  • Plated steel screws and rivets. The cheapest failure of all. Rust bleeds down the frame from every fastener within a couple of summers, and the streaks never come out of the powder coat.
  • Stainless mesh clamped straight into an aluminium frame with no isolation. Two dissimilar metals plus salt water is a battery. Without a nylon or EPDM isolating gasket the aluminium sacrifices itself around the mesh edge and the screen loosens.
  • General-purpose powder coat instead of an architectural coating. It fades and chalks on north and west elevations, and most coating warranties will not apply.
  • Zinc-plated hinges and a builder’s-grade lock cylinder. Good mesh in cheap hardware still fails: the door drops, the latch stops lining up and the key gets stiff by the third salty winter.

None of these are visible from the footpath on handover day. All of them are visible on the invoice, if the invoice names the mesh grade, the fastener metal, the coating standard and the hardware. What “commercial grade” and the rest of the sales words are worth

Nothing, on their own. Commercial grade, heavy duty, premium, architectural and lifetime have no definition in any Australian Standard, so nobody can be held to them and no warranty claim ever turns on them. Marine grade is only meaningful when it is followed by a number: marine grade means 316, or it means nothing.

Here is the same idea as a straight swap. Ask for the right-hand version in writing:

  1. “Security mesh” becomes AS 5039 tested, with the test report or compliance certificate supplied.
  2. “Professionally fitted” becomes installed to AS 5040 with one-way security screws into the frame.
  3. “Marine grade” becomes grade 316 woven mesh, 0.8 mm wire.
  4. “Powder coated” becomes architectural powder coating to AS 3715.
  5. “Secure lock” becomes three-point locking with a key-free internal egress release on bedroom and exit doors.

The straight recommendation for a typical Wollongong house

For a three-bedroom brick veneer somewhere in the middle band, say Figtree, Coniston or Dapto town, our default is 304 woven stainless on the front and back doors, perforated aluminium on any window that is well sheltered and inland-facing, marine powder-coated frames throughout, stainless fasteners throughout, three-point locks on both doors and a key-free egress release on every bedroom window screen. That package lands around $3,300 to $6,600 for a whole house and it will not need anything but a hose down for well over a decade.

East of the rail line, change one thing: every piece of mesh becomes 316. Do not mix grades on a coastal house to save $200, because the 304 openings will tea-stain years before the 316 ones and the house ends up looking patchy. West of the highway, change one thing the other way: perforated aluminium everywhere is fine, and the saving is real money you can put into more openings. When you should not spend the extra

We would rather say this plainly than sell an upgrade. If you are in a sheltered street at Kembla Grange, Mount Kembla or West Dapto, more than about 5 km from the water and not on bushfire-prone land, 316 stainless is over-specified. The aluminium door will outlast the mortgage. Spend the difference on screening the two rear windows nobody can see from the street, because those are the openings that actually get used in a break-in.

Likewise, we do not fit decorative wrought-iron bars or grilles that cannot be opened from inside, and we will not fit a fixed security screen to a bedroom window with no egress option. Reading the early warning signs

Four symptoms tell you which part of the specification was wrong. A fine white powdery bloom on an aluminium screen is surface oxidation, usually cosmetic but a sign the coating is spent. A light brown film on stainless is tea staining: surface contamination rather than rust in the alloy, and it wipes off with a mild cleaner and a soft cloth. Orange streaks running down from a screw head are a fastener made of the wrong metal, and that one is worth fixing early before it stains the frame permanently. A stiff or gritty lock cylinder is salt crystallising inside it, which a squirt of dry lubricant twice a year prevents. Is 316 marine-grade stainless mesh worth the extra money in Wollongong?
Within about 1 km of breaking surf, yes. The step up from 304 to 316 woven mesh adds roughly $150 to $300 on a hinged door, taking it from about $750 to $1,100 up to about $900 to $1,400 installed. In a salt-spray street that buys you an extra 8 to 12 years before the mesh starts pitting. Two or three kilometres inland the same upgrade is money you could spend screening another two windows instead.
What does AS 5039 actually test?
AS 5039 is the product standard for security screen doors and window grilles. A compliant screen has to survive a knife-shear attack, a jemmy or lever test, a pull test on the mesh and the frame, a probe test and a dynamic impact test. AS 5040 covers how it is installed, including one-way screw fixing into the frame, and AS 5041 sets out the test methods. A screen with none of those certifications is a flyscreen with a heavier frame, whatever the label says.
Which specification fails earliest on the Illawarra coast?

Does the word commercial grade mean anything on a security door?

Why do sheltered doors corrode faster than exposed ones near the beach?
Because rain is what washes the salt off. A screen on an exposed north-east elevation in Fairy Meadow gets rinsed by most of the 1,200 mm of rain that falls on Wollongong each year. A screen tucked under a deep verandah or in a porch collects the same airborne salt and never gets washed, so chloride concentrates on the surface. Sheltered coastal openings are the ones that need the 3-monthly fresh-water hose down most.
What mesh suits a house on the escarpment side in a bushfire-prone area?
For bushfire-prone land, AS 3959 requires screens with a mesh aperture no greater than 2 mm made from corrosion-resistant steel, bronze or aluminium, and it rules aluminium out at the highest attack levels. Woven stainless at 0.8 mm wire meets the aperture requirement comfortably, which is why homes on the Figtree and Mount Keira side of town often end up with stainless for fire reasons rather than salt reasons.
