How long do security doors last in Wollongong?

A security door is a fifteen-to-twenty-five year purchase if you buy the right spec, and a five-year purchase if you do not. In the Illawarra the difference is decided by salt, not by brand. Here is what each mesh and frame really gives you, what fails first, and how to get the long end of the range.

The honest numbers

Real lifespans, by mesh and by street.

It depends almost entirely on your salt exposure. On a coastal Wollongong street, a 316 marine-grade stainless door on a marine powder-coated frame will typically give 20 to 25 years, a 304 stainless door will start tea-staining in 5 to 8 years and look tired by 10, and perforated aluminium may pit within 5 years. Move a few kilometres inland to Unanderra or Dapto and those same aluminium and 304 doors comfortably reach 15 to 20 years. The door is not the variable, the air is.

That is not a sales line, it is a materials-science one. Australian Standard AS 4312 divides the country into atmospheric corrosivity zones, and the strip of Wollongong east of the Princes Highway falls into category C4 to C5, the most aggressive brackets outside a chemical plant. Chloride ions carried in on the north-easterly sea breeze land on every horizontal and sheltered surface of your door and sit there. Every rain event that reaches the door washes them off. Every surface the rain misses keeps them.

Five kilometres west, at the foot of the escarpment, the same house gets a fraction of the chloride load. The Wollongong City Council area stretches from Helensburgh in the north to Windang in the south and is rarely more than about ten kilometres from the surf to the escarpment, yet that narrow strip covers several AS 4312 corrosivity categories. That is an unusual amount of variation to fit inside one local government area, and it is the whole reason we refuse to quote a single spec across the Illawarra. Selling a 316 door to a sheltered Figtree home is over-selling. Selling an aluminium door to a Towradgi beach street is under-selling, and it is the customer who pays for it in year six.

Failure order

What actually breaks first.

Hardware, nearly every time. Hinges, lock barrels and door closers wear out or seize long before the mesh or the frame gives up. The second failure point is the frame corner joins and the fixing points, where dissimilar metals meet and galvanic corrosion sets in. The mesh itself is usually the last thing to go. That is why a door with cheap hardware on good mesh is a false economy.

1. Hardware, years 3 to 10.

A front door on a busy household cycles thousands of times a year. Cheap pressed hinges develop play, barrels stiffen as salt works into the mechanism, and pneumatic closers lose their damping. None of this is dramatic, the door just starts to drag, bind and rattle. Good marine-grade hardware costs a modest amount more up front and is the single highest-leverage upgrade you can make, which is why the triple-lock upgrade at $60 to $140 is worth taking on any door that will see daily use.

2. Frame joins and fixings, years 5 to 15.

Galvanic corrosion happens when two dissimilar metals sit in contact with an electrolyte between them, and salt-laden moisture is an excellent electrolyte. A stainless mesh clamped into an aluminium frame with the wrong fasteners is a textbook galvanic cell. Done properly, with isolation at the mesh-to-frame interface and matched fixings, the join lasts as long as the door. Done cheaply, it blooms white powder at the corners in year five.

3. Mesh, years 10 to 25.

Woven 316 stainless is remarkably durable. It is the last component to fail and frequently outlives the frame it sits in. Perforated aluminium is a rigid punched sheet and will not tear, but its powder coating is its armour, and once the coating is breached the aluminium underneath starts to pit. On the coast, that breach usually comes from a stone chip, a scraping wheelie bin or a badly drilled fixing rather than from age.

The Illawarra factor

Why Wollongong is harder on screens than most of Australia.

Yes, the Port Kembla industrial air shortens screen life. Suburbs around Port Kembla, Warrawong and Cringila get sulphur-bearing industrial air on top of coastal salt, and that combination is more aggressive than either on its own. AS 4312 rates much of the coastal Illawarra strip as corrosivity category C4 to C5, which is the same bracket as a surf-front street. We spec 316 stainless and marine-grade powder coating to AS 3715 in those suburbs for that reason.

The escarpment adds a second, less obvious driver. The Illawarra range forces moist onshore air upwards, which is why Wollongong runs well over 1,100mm of rain a year and why humidity sits high for months at a time. Corrosion needs moisture and time-of-wetness, and a screen that stays damp under an eave in Corrimal for hours after every shower is corroding for every one of those hours. Homes at the foot of the escarpment around Figtree and Mount Keira also collect leaf litter in door tracks, which traps moisture right against the frame.

Repair or replace

When an old door is worth saving.

A corroded security door can often be repaired instead of replaced. If the frame is straight and the corners are sound, mesh can be re-stretched or replaced, hinges and locks swapped, and surface tea-staining on stainless cleaned back with a proprietary stainless cleaner rather than replaced. Once the frame corners have opened up or corrosion has eaten into the fixing points, repair stops being economic and a new door is the honest answer.

A worked example.

A 1990s home in Fairy Meadow, three streets back from the beach, had a 12-year-old 304 stainless front door that looked finished. Close inspection said otherwise: the frame was true, the corners tight, the mesh intact. What it had was heavy tea-staining and a seized barrel. We cleaned the mesh back, replaced the hinges and fitted a new triple-lock, and it came in at about $290. A replacement 316 door on that opening would have been $1,150. The rear door on the same house had corrosion through the bottom rail and open corner joins, so that one we replaced in 316 at $1,280. Same house, same visit, two honest and opposite answers. Total $1,570 rather than the $2,430 a replace-everything quote would have been.

The rule of thumb we use: if the repair is under about a third of the replacement price and the frame is structurally sound, repair. Getting the long end

How to reach 25 years instead of 8.

Washing the screens really does extend their life, and it is the cheapest thing you will ever do for the door. Rinsing with fresh water removes the chloride deposits that drive corrosion, and most manufacturer warranties on coastal jobs actually require it, typically monthly within a kilometre of the surf and quarterly further inland. Sheltered openings under an eave miss out on natural rain rinsing and are usually the first to corrode, which surprises people.

  • Match the mesh to your street, not your budget. This is worth more than every other measure combined.
  • Insist on marine-grade hardware on the coast, not just marine-grade mesh. The mesh is rarely what fails.
  • Rinse with fresh water, monthly near the surf, quarterly inland. Pay special attention to sheltered doors the rain never touches.
  • Keep door tracks clear of escarpment leaf litter, which holds moisture against the frame.
  • Never use a steel-wool pad or an abrasive cleaner on stainless. It embeds carbon-steel particles that rust and make the staining worse.
